When heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) weds gigolo King Westly, she’s kidnapped by her unhappy father, who hopes to get the marriage annulled. Fleeing the family’s yacht in Florida, Ellie boards a bus where she meets Peter Warne (Clark Gable), a recently-fired newspaperman who agrees to get her to New York in exchange for her story. Once the two falls in love, even though all is forgiven at home, Ellie cannot bear losing Peter. But when he slips out to borrow some money to get married, Ellie returns home, certain she’s been deserted. Yet, once Mr. Andrews arranges another wedding with Westly, the realization that Ellie loves someone else prompts him to reunite her and Peter.
